Oprah And The Rock Spark Controversy Over Wildfire Charity Drive
What does The Rock, Oprah, and the Maui Wildfires have in common? Burning hot, headline grabbing, controversy my friend.
In the wake of the devastating wildfires that blazed a deadly trail across the Hawaiian Island of Maui both Oprah Winfrey and The Rock, two of the biggest and wealthiest celebrities in the known universe, took to their social media pages to announce a joint charity venture between the two. The noble effort to bring financial relief and to help to those Hawaiian lives that have been upended by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula seemed, for all intents and purposes, the normal rather typical response from the Hollywood crowd.
Oprah, joined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in an Instagram Video, declared…
“We have created the People’s Fund of Maui that will put money directly in the hands of the people who need it, right now. So if you send a donation ... that money is going to go to one of many residents who have been displaced in Maui — we guarantee it.”
They went on to announce that together they would kick in 10 million dollars of their own money in an effort to help kickstart the new fund. And that, dear reader, is where the plot and the controversy began to boil over…
