In every U.S. election there is a cheap way to win votes, which is essentially playing to the voter’s ego by telling them whatever they want to hear and then there is the hard way, telling them what they need to hear, the truth.
Ah, truth, that most ugly of words on the campaign trail. Searching for truth in an election setting is like trying to find a thoughtful discussion of public policy on MSNBC or Fox News. While both the major political parties here in the U.S. have had a historical aversion to truth telling, it’s the modern day version of the Republican Party that appears to have gone all in on the cheap way to win elections. They’ve mastered the art of telling their supporters whatever they want to hear regardless of how out of step with reality the message may be.
Now, don’t get me wrong, the Democrats are no saints either when it comes to telling their base what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear but, lately, it’s the elephants in the room that have been turning the bullhorn of bullshit up to 11. Because of this, tragically, many of the hard-working, red white and blue, loving Republican voters have been conditioned to run screaming from the truth.
