If it bleeds it leads!
That has been the rallying cry of newsrooms since the ink first started running on a printing press here in the United States of America. We love us some violent news stories. Whether it’s the latest missing white girl in the Caribbean, last weekend’s gangland shootout, or the rich suburbanite who murdered his family, the U.S. news media and documentary filmmakers love covering the most violent parts of U.S. society.
Why? Well, tragically, violence still sells.
Flip on any random evening news cast or scroll through your Hulu and Netflix menus and you are almost guaranteed to see some in-depth story or docu series highlighting a vicious murder or expose on a random serial killer. Our media is saturated with it. And while this may make for great entertainment, racking up views, clicks, and ratings, it does create a very serious problem in society… Fear.
