Napoleon Bonaparte is famously quoted as saying, “History is a set of lies agreed upon.” One can look no further than the assassination of John Kennedy or the myth of the Trojan Horse to see how lies, myths, and legends become today’s historical fact. No, Lee Harvey Oswald did not assassinate John F. Kennedy. He was never convicted for the crime in a court of law, yet, we are told over and over again that he was the lone assassin. That famous Trojan Horse that all those Greeks jumped out of in order to conquer Troy was actually pure bullshit. Most historians today will tell you that more than likely that story was just a myth used to bolster the legend of Greek supremacy and military success.
So, as we daily digest and navigate the major news taking place all around us, how do we prevent the current fiction of today from becoming tomorrow’s historical fact?
